Another New Year Without a Cure - Multiple Sclerosis Blog

2012 has ended and there is no cure for MS yet in the books.

That does not mean that I am not hopeful for the progress that is to be made. I am encouraged by some of the research upon which we reported this past few months. Not all of the research was ?positive?, but even research that seems to debunk theories is research in a positive direction; in my opinion.

As Caryn set up Skype accounts and we spent the holidays video chatting with family and friends, I was reminded as to how quickly science fiction can become science fact. Dr James Bowen said in my interview with him last month that while there are a number of great advances in the treatment of MS in the pipeline, a ?cure? is going to take a breakthrough. I can?t help but think that the speed at which things that were once thought fanciful have become part of our everyday lives, that such a breakthrough may be in the offing within my lifetime.

I?m not Pollyanna slipping on my blushed spectacles in saying that. I believe that great things which will change the way doctors treat MS are in the offing.

Am I disappointed that the ?magic pill? hasn?t been found? Of Course! Am I unhappy with the disease modifying treatments as they stand? You betcha? But there is real progress taking place and the number of very smart people, working across boarders and former barriers is more than encouraging to me.

Rather than a year in review, I look forward to what 2013 will bring for those of us long affected by MS, those new to our ?club? and for those souls yet to hear our inanition speech, ?you have multiple sclerosis?.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank your Life With MS Blog community for your continued support of this platform, for your patients with me as I made a rather large life change at the end of this year and for your willingness to share and be here for one another. I believe this to be one of the most unique places on the interweb and it?s all because of YOU.

With and old year ending and a new one set to birth I am, as always, wishing you and your family the best of health.

Prints of Grace: 7 Quick Takes Friday (Vol. 83)

?Don?t Leave, I love you!!? was one of the cute things I remember my youngest sister shouting (with drama and sincerity) when people would get ready to head out.? That?s basically how I?m feeling about her going back to OSU after we?ve gotten to hang out together and as a family over the past couple weeks.? I guess I need to figure out when and how I can get up to OH to see her since she might not be back for a while, and she still hasn?t given me the West African dance lessons I want. ?Someone gave me what I consider a really nice compliment many years ago: ?For a white girl, you got rhythm.?? I really would love to learn West African dance which my sister has been studying in and out of Africa.? ?????? Baby Shower?My sister and brother-in-law are expecting their first child this February. ?My mom's best friend (aka in years past as our "other mother") threw a baby shower for her. ?It was neat that she hosted it at her house, because my sister and her husband got married in the backyard at that very house by the pastor from their church. ?Just as on the day of their marriage, there was a lot of love and hope for the future present. ?It's also the same place where our "other mother" and another family friend threw me a bridal shower many moons ago. ?

Extending Family?Two close family friends from Africa were at the baby shower for my sister. ?Both women have been like second mothers to us. ?Here's a photo of my mom, Madrine (from Kenya), Theresa, and Bouchra (from Morocco).

Humility on the Homefront?At one of our family gatherings, I made mention of needing to get home before it got too late so I could do my 7 Quick Takes and work on my audition piece. ?Theresa asked what 7 Quick Takes are. ?I laughed and explained the tradition I have been doing for 83 weeks now. ?Truthfully, I've been super-excited to have over 26,000 people from 161 different countries visit my blog (and my husband thinks it's really cool as well), but as is so often true of bloggers and writers in general, most of my family doesn't read much of what I write. ?C'est la vie, ou c'est ma vie. ???????????
-5- What Goes Around?There are few activities I believe that would make me more repentant and compassionate towards my younger sisters than having the challenge of encouraging the oldest child in a family to be a good, loving sibling. ?When I see how insistent, forceful, and possessive toddlers can be, it makes me want to apologize especially to the sister closest to me in age for being such a brat when I was little. ?Even knowing that it's quite normal for toddlers to guard their turf and toys, I bet I came across as pretty harsh since I was an intense kid as it was, which likely made the usual "it's all about me" syndrome more pronounced, especially when it came to a cute blond hair, blue-eyed baby who arrived on the scene when I was 2 and 1/2.

Audition Piece Turned In?I've mentioned in the previous two volumes of my Quick Takes that I've been working on an audition piece. ?I turned it in this past weekend, and it is very likely that I'll know by the end of this coming weekend if I'm going to be the fourth writer of the young adult series in addition to helping them with copy editing future books. ?Check back to find out if I made the cut or will just be making cuts (copy editing) by tuning in next week.????

Our Parish's Seminarians?We have two seminarians from our parish who started at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD this past fall. ?John, our dearly beloved brother in Christ and best friend, you probably already know about if you?ve read this blog before.? The second young man from our parish is originally from Ghana.? He and John came by to visit me while I was nannying the girls (who are actually John?s nieces).? Henri shared some great stories with us about what it was like to grow up in Ghana.? We were all riveted.?? EU's Almunia sets deadline for Google antitrust plan

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union set Google an ultimatum on Tuesday, giving it a month to come up with detailed proposals to resolve a two-year investigation into complaints that it used its power to block rivals, including Microsoft.

The EU's antitrust chief, Joaquin Almunia, delivered the deadline in a meeting with Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in Brussels.

If it fails to address the complaints, the world's most popular search engine could face a lengthy battle with what is arguably the world's most powerful antitrust authority. If found guilty, it could mean a fine of up to 10 percent of its revenue, or $4 billion.

"Since our preliminary talks with Google started in July, we have substantially reduced our differences regarding possible ways to address each of the four competition concerns expressed by the Commission," Almunia said in a statement.

"On the basis of the progress made, I now expect Google to come forward with a detailed commitment text in January 2013."

Almunia said he would seek feedback from rivals and users once he has received Google's proposal.

Google said it continues to work co-operatively with the Commission.

The European Commission has been examining informal settlement proposals from Google since July but has not sought feedback from the complainants, suggesting it is not convinced by what Google has put on the table so far.

The EU watchdog's two-year investigation has centered on complaints that Google unfairly favored its services over its rivals in search results, and that it may have copied material from travel and restaurant websites without permission.

The Commission is also looking into whether Google restricted advertisers from transferring their data to rivals.

The Commission's decision to press Google to offer more far-reaching concessions comes in sharp contrast to the case U.S. regulators have against the company.

Sources told Reuters the U.S. Federal Trade Commission could drop their investigation into Google without requiring any major change in how the company does business.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? George Clooney is trying to highlight satellite evidence from a U.S.-based anti-genocide group that 26 villages in Sudan were intentionally set on fire last month.

The American actor and activist said Thursday that destroying a village is a war crime and that the international community must counter and create consequences for such crimes.

The Satellite Sentinel Project, which Clooney helped found, said satellite imagery shows that 26 villages, food crops and grasslands were burned in a 54-square-mile (140-square-kilometer) area in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan in November.

Sudanese troops are fighting rebels who were once aligned with South Sudan. When South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year, the rebels were placed in the Sudan half of the partition.
