THX releases iOS app for calibrating your home theater's visuals and audio

THX releases iOS app for calibrating your home theater's visuals and audio

Audio titan THX has released its very first mobile app, and it's aimed at helping folks fine tune their home theater experience. Dubbed "THX tune-up," the app slings videos, photos and test patterns to televisions and projectors to guide users through gauging and adjusting their kit's aspect ratio, brightness, color, contrast and tint. The solution isn't comprehensive, but it promises to work with hardware of any brand. If you don't have an AirPlay setup or cables to pipe content from your iDevice to a larger screen, the application also lends a hand when it comes to tweaking color and tint by leveraging a device's camera and a baked in color filter. As for audio, the app includes a pair of sound tests to make sure speakers are in phase and pump out the right output. THX tune-up won't be available on Android until this Spring, but it's currently up for download on Cupertino's App Store for free -- until it gets slapped with a $1.99 price tag after February 4th, that is. Hit the bordering source link to give it a spin.

THX LAUNCHES ITS FIRST MOBILE iOS APP TO HELP CONSUMERS PROPERLY ADJUST AND GET THE MOST FROM THEIR TV, PROJECTOR AND SPEAKERS

THX tune-up[TM] is Available Free for One Week Worldwide, then Will be Offered at $1.99 in Select Countries

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - January 29, 2013 - THX Ltd. today announced its first mobile app, THX tune-up[TM], which is now available in the iTunes App Store. THX tune-up is an easy-to-use, interactive app that lets the general consumer use an iOS device to adjust their TVs, projectors and speakers, to get the best performance and enjoyment from their entertainment system - regardless of brand and price.

THX tune-up arrives just in time for this year's Big Game. According to research conducted by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, more than 7.5 million viewers are expected to buy a new television specifically for the game.1 To help all home viewers get on a level playing field and enjoy their new or existing TVs on this big day, THX is offering the app worldwide for free for the first week of its release (January 29 - February 4, 2013). THX tune-up will then be available at its regular price of U.S. $1.99 in select countries.2

"By using the THX tune-up app, sports fans, movie enthusiasts, gamers and even reality show addicts can confirm their TV and sound system are set up correctly. THX tune-up guides consumers simply and easily through picture and sound adjustments to get the best possible entertainment experience from their home system," said Sandra Benedetto, director of product management, THX Ltd. "We also included fun stuff, like links to THX cinema trailers and our signature "THX(R) Deep NoteTM" sound that are bound to evoke envy on a newly 'tuned-up' system."

THX tune-up features
Using specifically custom designed video patterns and audio tests, THX tune-up allows consumers to check that video equipment settings are optimized based on the consumer's equipment capabilities and lighting environment, and external speakers are working in phase and are connected properly. For instance, color and tint settings are often complicated to adjust properly without special glasses or other unique equipment. THX tune-up uses the iPad or iPhone camera and a special, THX-designed built-in color filter to help consumers easily ensure colors are accurate and skin tones appear natural.

The interactive app provides users step-by-step instructions via narration and text, as well as a detailed guide on how to use all of its features, walking consumers through the following tests:

Video adjustments
Aspect ratio - ensures your TV displays shapes and sizes correctly
Brightness - makes certain shadow details and night scenes are clearly visible
Contrast - ensures that white detail is distinct on your television
Color - make sure colors are bright and vibrant but not overly saturated or cartoonish
Tint - ensures skin tones appear natural and are not too green or red

Audio adjustments
Speaker assignment - ensures that speakers are connected to the correct audio video receiver (AVR) output and intended sound is coming from the correct speaker
Speaker phase - confirms that positive and negative speaker wires are connected correctly and all speakers are in phase

The THX tune-up app is not intended to provide full calibration capabilities. For home theater enthusiasts, calibrators or installers that want a higher level of control and ability to fine-tune their system, THX has a THX Calibrator Blu-ray Disc which is given to graduates from any THX Education class, and is also available in limited quantities at industry tradeshows and events in which THX participates.

Bonus features
THX tune-up is not all about settings - THX added a number of its classic cinema features to the app that can be appreciated over and over again:
· "THX Deep Note" - the sound that made THX famous is available at the push of a button in 5.1 surround sound
· "THX Trailers" - extraordinary THX trailers (just like the ones in THX Certified Cinemas) are available in HD for users to show off their newly tuned TV and sound systems to friends and family
· "Moo Can" - users can tilt their iPhone or iPad to hear the classic "moo" sound from a popular THX cinema trailer
· "Ask Tex" - provides consumers with an easy way to get answers to any questions they might have for THX about their home theater equipment and setup process

THX and future apps
With the launch of THX tune-up, THX is laying the groundwork for partner involvement with future applications that can provide a competitive differentiator and feature enhancements for mass consumer products. With a rich history born out of George Lucas' desire to improve cinema video and audio capabilities, THX hopes to help bridge the inherent hardware capability of smart devices, TVs, speakers and overall home theater systems with content creators' creative intent to improve the home entertainment experience.

Supported devices
THX tune-up is available now for Apple iOS devices only, including the iPad 2, 3 and 4 with iOS version 5.1.1 or later; the iPad Mini with version 6.0 or later; the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 with iOS version 5.1.1 or later; and the iPod Touch, generation 4 or later with iOS version 5.1.1 or later. THX plans to release an Android version in Spring 2013.

An Apple Digital AV adapter or Lightning Digital AV adapter and HDMI cable, or Apple TV is needed to connect the iPhone or iPad to your system.

Angry Warne calls for new Australia coach

Jan 30 2013 - 11:17:16

Test great Shane Warne on Wednesday called on Australia coach Mickey Arthur to be replaced by former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming days after branding the nation's cricket chiefs "muppets".

The outspoken leg-spinner, who said he was "frustrated on many levels at present", praised Fleming as "the best opposition captain we played against" on his website www.shanewarne.com.

"I believe he brings a lot to the table, a calmness, an intelligent understanding of the game and a very good cricket brain. He's a good communicator too as well as a good leader of men."

Warne, 43, who also wants former Test wicketkeeper Rod Marsh as chairman of selectors, said the current Australian set-up was not working as the players gear up for two Ashes series against England over the next year.

In a post entitled "Where is Australian cricket at? Part 1" on his website, Warne said: "The next 12 months is the biggest 12 months of cricket for the Australian cricket team in a long, long time.

"If we do nothing now, we will be where we were 30 years ago. There needs to be urgent action and a new strategy/plan put in place."

In Twitter comments on Monday, Warne blasted Cricket Australia's policy of rotating players, which has attracted stinging criticism from other greats of the game.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland has told Warne he is happy to discuss Warne's ideas but has expressed disappointment with the manner in which he expressed his concerns, CA said on its website.

Australia, third in the Test and one-day rankings, lost the recent Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka after drawing the one-day series and beating the visitors in the Test series.

Warne was last week fined Aus$5,000 (US$5,250) for a code of behaviour breach in the domestic Big Bash League.

And he apologised earlier this month after a foul-mouthed rant against West Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels that earned him a ban and a Aus$4,500 fine.

Warne claimed 708 Test wickets in a celebrated career that also courted controversy, including a fine for taking money from a bookmaker. He was sent home from the 2003 World Cup for taking a banned diuretic.

Also on Wednesday, CA said that Australian pace great Dennis Lillee has been appointed to CA's's high-performance team as a fast bowling advisor.

It's Italian Food week, and some of the biggest debates over pasta, wine and celeb chefs are going to get settled right here. We surveyed 1,468 avid diners about their Italian eating habits and discovered that grandma's cooking may not always be the best. The results in the slideshow will answer all your questions: which Boot-cuisine celeb is the most popular? Which pasta is the most comforting? How much is too much to spend on a dish at a restaurant. Click through to see the winners and losers of our first ever Italian Food Survey, and sound off about the results in the comments. Also check out our list of the top Italian restaurants in 25 U.S. cities here.

  • People Are Addicted to Italian

Italian constantly ranks as a favorite cuisine in our restaurant surveys, so it's no surprise to see that people are getting their pasta fix at least weekly, with 44% reporting that they eat Italian one or two times a week. Even more sauced up are the 23% of respondents who say they eat Italian three to four times a week. As for the 8% who say they eat Italian five or more times each week, we salute you. In place of confetti at your parade, we will throw grated Parmesan. <strong>How often do you typically eat Italian food?</strong> 1-2 times a week: 44% 3-4 times a week: 23% A few times a month: 21% 5 or more times a week: 8% Once a month or less: 4% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/chefs-guide-to-italy-insider-travel.html">Chef's Guide to Italy: Insider Travel Tips From the Pros</a>]</strong>

  • Home Cooking's Not All That

When people go out, they don't want to eat the same old pasta dishes they can make in their kitchen. A whopping 79% of respondents report that they avoid ordering dishes they can throw together at home when they're at a restaurant. And even though a lot of Italian grandmothers think their red sauce reigns supreme, the survey takers disagree - 59% of Italian food lovers say that they prefer restaurant cooking vs. 41% who say they prefer home cooking. But people expect more from restaurants. When going out to eat, 75% said it's either very important or extremely important to have authentic and imported Italian ingredients, while only 53% of home cooks said it's very or extremely important to have those imported and authentic ingredients in their kitchen. The takeaway? A lot of folks are reaching for premade sauces when making pasta at home. <strong>When ordering Italian food at a restaurant, do you:</strong> Avoid ordering dishes you can cook at home: 79% Order dishes you can make at home: 17% I don't cook Italian food at home: 4% <strong>How important is it that a restaurant use authentic and imported ingredients in its cuisine?</strong> Extremely: 37% Very: 38% Somewhat: 19% Not Very: 5% Not At All: 1% <strong>How important is it to use authentic and imported ingredients at home?</strong> Extremely: 22% Very: 31% Somewhat: 34% Not Very: 11% Not At All: 2% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/the-top-italian-restaurants-in-25-us.html">The Top Italian Restaurants in 25 U.S. Cities</a>]</strong>

  • Diners Will Pay for Good Pasta

When you're out to eat and you see a pasta dish that contains the same ingredients you can get for less than $4 at your local grocery store, fuggadeboutit, right? Actually, no. Our survey found that diners are more than willing to pay for top-notch plates of pasta - so it's no wonder that restaurants aren't hesitant to push the prices into the $20-a-dish range. In fact, 32% said that they'd spend $20-25 on a restaurant-prepared pasta dish, while 22% said that they would go beyond that and plop down over $25 for an awesome ravioli. $15-25 seems to be the sweet spot, with 63% saying they'd pay that much for a good dish. <strong>What is the most you would spend on a restaurant prepared pasta dish?</strong> Less than $10: 1% $10-14.99: 14% $15-19.99: 31% $20-24.99: 32% $25 or more: 22% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/the-hottest-italian-restaurants-in-us.html">The Hottest Italian Restaurants in the U.S.</a>]</strong>

  • Pasta Preference: Pappardelle Is the Best, Spaghetti Doesn't Make Top 5

The votes are in and it's official: people are so over spaghetti. The childhood staple didn't even rank in the top five favorite pastas, with broad and flat pappardelle taking the top slot. Also outranking spaghetti were linguine, ravioli and angel hair, which placed in spots two, three and four, respectively. All the way at the bottom of the list is tagliatelle, which ranked at No. 10 behind orecchiette. People are passionate about their pastas, so see the full rankings below and debate away! 1. Pappardelle 2. Linguine 3. Ravioli 4. Angel Hair 5. Penne 6. Spaghetti 7. Fettuccine 8. Rigatoni 9. Orecchiette 10. • It's the Sauce That Counts

When it come time to smother your favorite pasta in sauce, people want a little meat in the mix. Bolognese was the No. 1 choice for sauce, scoring 17% of the vote, while classic marinara came in second with 13%. Spicy arrabbiata landing in third with 8% of the vote, while carbonara and vodka sauce landed in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 7% each. There was a wide spread in the pasta sauce department, check out the full results: Bolognese: 17% Marinara: 13% Arrabbiata: 8% Carbonara: 7% Vodka Sauce: 7% Pesto: 7% Aglio Olio (garlic and oil): 7% Pomodoro: 6% Clam Sauce: 6% Puttanesca: 6% Ragu: 5% All'amatriciana: 4% Alfredo: 3% Squid Ink: 1% Other: 1% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/italian-food-survey-favorite-pastas-is.html">Italian Food Survey: Favorite Pastas, Is Home Cooking Better?</a>]</strong>

  • Twirling Your Pasta in a Spoon is Uncommon, But Cutting It Is Just Weird

An impressive 40% of surveyors still use the old-school method of twirling pasta with a spoon to insure they don't end up slopping sauce all over those checkered tablecloths. However, taking a knife to the noodles is just going too far. Only 18% of surveyors say they cut long strands before scarfing them, while a super-majority of 82 percent are a firm "no" when it comes to cutting. <strong>Do you twirl your pasta with a spoon?</strong> Yes: 40% No: 56% I don't twirl my pasta at all: 4% <strong>Do you cut long strands before eating them?</strong> Yes: 18% No: 56% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/best-meal-ever-2013-another-epic-look.html">Best Meal Ever 2013: Another Epic Look at Favorite Meals</a>]</strong>

  • Wine Wire: Overall, People Prefer Red to White, but Pinot Grigio Is Tops

It was a tight race for the favorite Italian vino - our poll included a dozen types of wines, and Pinot Grigio was the favorite varietal, eeking out a victory with 16% of the vote. Close behind the spritely white was Chianti (15%), Montepulciano (14%) and Sangiovese (12%), with Prosecco securing a sparkling fifth-place finish with 11% of the vote. Even though Pinot won the battle, red wine won the war. Though the vote for the top five vinos (one of which was chosen by 68% of respondents) was split between different grapes, 41% said their favorite pour was a red compared with 27% that said their favorite was a white. Take a look at the top 10 vinos below: <strong>What is your favorite Italian wine?</strong> 1. Pinot Grigio 2. Chianti 3. Montepulciano 4. Sangiovese 5. Prosecco 6. Moscato 7. Barbera 8. Nebbiolo 9. • Trend Watch: Whole-Wheat Pasta and Aperitif Spirits Have Yet to Catch On

If you're friends with a cocktail geek, chances are you're heard them wax poetic about Italian herbal liqueurs, which are all the rage in upscale libation lounges. Well, these spirits may be popular with diehards, but the trend hasn't swayed the general public yet. When it comes to Italian booze, people still want their limoncello, with a plurality of 38% saying that it's the favorite. In second place is Sambuca with 14% of the vote, while Campari, the first aperitif on the list, only sneaks into third place with 13% of the vote. Another trend that hasn't caught on? Whole wheat pasta. When asked if they order whole wheat noodles when available, 68% of those surveyed said no. <strong>What is your favorite Italian spirit?</strong> Limoncello: 38% Sambuca: 14% Campari: 13% Frangelico: 13% Grappa: 11% Amaro: 6% Strega: 2% Other: 3% <strong>Do you prefer to eat whole-wheat pasta?</strong> Yes: 32% No: 68% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/when-chefs-tweet-9-culinary-twitter.html">When Chefs Tweet: 9 Culinary Twitter Feuds</a>]</strong>

  • Cheese and Comfort Food (But Aren't They One and the Same)?

News flash: Italian food is comforting. Ok, no one is shocked by that. But when you're looking to dig into some pasta on an ice-cold day, what is your go-to? Pizza is the best food to provide solace on a day that has got you down, with 18% of voters saying it's their favorite comfort food. There was a pretty even split between the top five choices, with lasagna (17%), pasta Bolognese (13%), eggplant Parmigiana (13%) and spaghetti and meatballs (12%) rounding out the selection. Or if you're for comfort - say cheese! We also polled the top fromages from Italy, and are you really surprised that Parmigiano-Reggiano came out on top with 35% of the vote, followed by Mozzarella at 19% and Pecorino-Romano at 12%. <strong>What's Your Favorite Comfort Food Dish?</strong> Pizza: 18% Lasagna: 17% Pasta Bolognese: 13% Eggplant Parmigiana: 13% Spaghetti and Meatballs: 12% Veal Parmigiana: 8% Chicken Parmigiana: 7% Baked Ziti: 4% <strong>What Is Your Favorite Cheese? </strong> Parmigiano-Reggiano: 35% Mozzarella: 19% Pecorino-Romano: 12% Gorgonzola: 6% Provolone: 6% Ricotta: 5% Asiago: 4% Grana Padano: 3% Taleggio: 3% Fontina: 2% Burrata: 2% Mascarpone: 1% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/7-super-bowl-fast-food-deals-that-can.html">7 Fast Food Super Bowl Deals That Can Break Your Belt</a>]</strong>

  • Batali is Boss, Giada Inspires a Love/Hate Response

With numerous restaurants, countless television appearances (including a guest-host gig on The Chew) and cookbooks galore, it's no surprise that Mario Batali is the most beloved personality in the Italian food world, with 30% of folks saying he's their favorite chef. Lidia Bastianich, one of his partners at NYC's Eataly, came in second place with 22% of the vote, while Giada di Laurentiis was in third with 19%. Not everyone loves her, though - a number of voters took the time to call her out in an open-ended question that asked about the "most annoying Italian trend," with folks complaining that they can't stand her "pronunciation of Italian words." <strong>Who's your favorite chef/personality specializing in Italian cuisine?</strong> Mario Batali: 30% Lidia Bastianich: 22% Giada di Laurentiis: 19% Michael Chiarello: 7% Fabio Viviani: 4% Michael White: 4% Anne Burrell: 3% Scott Conant 2% Joe Bastianich: 1% <strong>[Also see: <a href="http://blog.zagat.com/2013/01/10-best-restaurants-in-las-vegas.html">10 Best Restaurants in Vegas</a>]</strong>

WPS Health Insurance laying off 450 - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI ...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - WPS Health Insurance has notified the state it will begin laying off about 450 employees at the end of March.

The layoffs are mainly because the company lost two major federal contracts. 250 people in Monona and Madison and 201 people in Wausau are affected. The Monona-based nonprofit health insurer anticipates additional layoffs if it doesn't find new business to replace the federal contracts.

WPS CEO Mike Hamerlik to the State Journal (http://bit.ly/14rgIKI ) last November that up to 600 employees could lose their jobs in 2013. The company lost contracts to process Medicare claims as well as manage care claims for the military in 21 states.

The contracts made up about 40% of the company's annual revenue last year.

Artificial pancreas: The way of the future for treating type 1 diabetes

Jan. 28, 2013 ? IRCM researchers, led by endocrinologist Dr. R?mi Rabasa-Lhoret, were the first to conduct a trial comparing a dual-hormone artificial pancreas with conventional diabetes treatment using an insulin pump and showed improved glucose levels and lower risks of hypoglycemia. Their results, published January 28 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), can have a great impact on the treatment of type 1 diabetes by accelerating the development of the external artificial pancreas.

The artificial pancreas is an automated system that simulates the normal pancreas by continuously adapting insulin delivery based on changes in glucose levels. The dual-hormone artificial pancreas tested at the IRCM controls glucose levels by automatically delivering insulin and glucagon, if necessary, based on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) readings and guided by an advanced algorithm.

"We found that the artificial pancreas improved glucose control by 15 per cent and significantly reduced the risk of hypoglycemia as compared with conventional insulin pump therapy," explains engineer Ahmad Haidar, first author of the study and doctoral student in Dr. Rabasa-Lhoret's research unit at the IRCM and at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University. "The artificial pancreas also resulted in an 8-fold reduction of the overall risk of hypoglycemia, and a 20-fold reduction of the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia."

People living with type 1 diabetes must carefully manage their blood glucose levels to ensure they remain within a target range. Blood glucose control is the key to preventing serious long-term complications related to high glucose levels (such as blindness or kidney failure) and reduces the risk of hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood glucose that can lead to confusion, disorientation and, if severe, loss of consciousness).

"Approximately two-thirds of patients don't achieve their target range with current treatments," says Dr. Rabasa-Lhoret, Director of the Obesity, Metabolism and Diabetes research clinic at the IRCM. "The artificial pancreas could help them reach these targets and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, which is feared by most patients and remains the most common adverse effect of insulin therapy. In fact, nocturnal hypoglycemia is the main barrier to reaching glycemic targets."

"Infusion pumps and glucose sensors are already commercially-available, but patients must frequently check the sensor and adjust the pump's output," says Mr. Haidar. "To liberate them from this sizable challenge, we needed to find a way for the sensor to talk to the pump directly. So we developed an intelligent dosing algorithm, which is the brain of the system. It can constantly recalculate insulin dosing based on changing glucose levels, in a similar way to the GPS system in a car, which recalculates directions according to traffic or an itinerary change."

The researchers' algorithm, which could eventually be integrated as software into a smart phone, receives data from the CGM, calculates the required insulin (and glucagon, if needed) and wirelessly controls the pump to automatically administer the proper doses without intervention by the patient.

"The system we tested more closely mimics a normal pancreas by secreting both insulin and glucagon," adds Dr. Laurent Legault, peadiatric endocrinologist and outgoing Director of the Insulin Pump Centre at the Montreal Children's Hospital, and co-author of the study. "While insulin lowers blood glucose levels, glucagon has the opposite effect and raises glucose levels. Glucagon can protect against hypoglycemia if a patient with diabetes miscalculates the necessary insulin dose."

"Our work is exciting because the artificial pancreas has the potential to substantially improve the management of diabetes and reduce daily frustrations for patients," concludes Dr. Rabasa-Lhoret. "We are pursuing our clinical trials to test the system for longer periods and with different age groups. It will then probably be introduced gradually to clinical practice, using insulin alone, with early generations focusing on overnight glucose controls."

This study was conducted with 15 adult patients with type 1 diabetes, who had been using an insulin pump for at least three months. Patients were admitted twice to the IRCM's clinical research facility and received, in random order, both treatments: the dual-hormone artificial pancreas and the conventional insulin pump therapy. During each 15-hour visit, their blood glucose levels were monitored as they exercised on a stationary bike, received an evening meal and a bedtime snack, and slept at the facility overnight.

Dr. Rabasa-Lhoret's research is funded by Diabetes Qu?bec, the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the IRCM's J.A. De S?ve Chair in clinical research. IRCM collaborators who contributed to study include Maryse Dallaire, Ammar Alkhateeb, Ad?le Coriati, Virginie Messier and Maude Millette.

About diabetes

Type-1 diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesn't produce enough or any insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood. It occurs most often in children, adolescents or young adults. People with type-1 diabetes depend on insulin to live, either through daily injections or with a pump. Diabetes is a major cause of vision loss, kidney and cardiovascular diseases.

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, an estimated 285 million people worldwide are affected by diabetes, approximately 10 per cent of which have type 1 diabetes. With a further 7 million people developing diabetes each year, this number is expected to hit 438 million by 2030, making it a global epidemic.?

Down the hole

Here's a view of what researchers saw looking down the borehole toward the lake.

Research teams from Russia, the United Kingdom and United States have each spearheaded drilling efforts over the past few years to pierce and sample separate subglacial Antarctic lakes. Russian scientists reported last year piercing into Lake Vostok but has so far turned up no identifiable life. Those researchers are now working to analyze a new sample of ice recently retrieved from that drill project. Last month, the British team suspended its efforts for this summer season (which ends next month) to reach Lake Ellsworth.

The just-completed borehole into Lake Whillans ?marks the first successful retrieval of clean whole samples from an Antarctic subglacial lake,? the U.S. team reported today. ?Water and sediment samples returned to the surface are now being processed to answer seminal questions related to the structure and function of subglacial microbial life, climate history, and contemporary ice sheet dynamics.?

A research team led by Frank Rack, of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, recently developed and field-tested the novel hot-water drill used to cut through the roughly half-mile-deep sheet of ice to reach Lake Whillans. ?Over the whole Antarctic continent, there are more than 340 [subglacial] lakes,? he notes. ?We selected this one because we know that it goes up and down, which means that the water underneath the ice sheet is periodically filling up the lake, then draining out again.?

Researchers have monitored this cycle through a rise and fall of the surface of that portion of the ice sheet covering the lake. Each cycle can last up to a decade, Rack says.

A video camera and series of sampling instruments will be periodically lowered down the borehole in the day or two available before this portal begins freezing shut again. ?Lake Whillans has already presented surprises,? according to Doug Fox, a reporter embedded with the drill research team, which is camped out less than 400 miles from the South Pole. ?For one, the lake has turned out to be only five or six feet deep ? shallower than the 20 to 30 feet that people expected based on seismic measurements,? Fox reported in a blog on the Discover website.

When I met with the Lake Whillans research team, last month, they planned to begin analyses of retrieved water and sediment within minutes of it reaching the surface. A series of mobile research labs were recently hauled to the Lake Whillans drill site. At least one lab will be used to study the chemistry of the water. Another will focus on probing for signs of microbial life ? chiefly bacteria and viruses.

Bodies of missing Mexican band members found in well

MONTERREY (Reuters) - Police found a dozen bodies inside a well in northern Mexico, some of them members of a band abducted last week by an armed group, a spokesman for the state of Nuevo Leon, Jorge Domene, said on Monday.

Authorities have identified four of the bodies, including that of a Colombian national. All were wearing jeans and T-shirts with the logo of the music group - "Poderoso Kombo Kolombia."

One band member who managed to escape told police that after he and the others were kidnapped, their armed men captors asked them if they belonged to an organized crime gang. They were shot when they refused to answer.

It was not clear how the surviving band member escaped or whether he was wounded. Domene said he had fled Mexico after reporting the attack.

A total of 18 men, 12 musicians plus staff, were abducted on Thursday at a party in a bar near the industrial city of Monterrey, Domene said.

"Presumably there could be more bodies so we will extend the search as far as conditions allow it," he told a press conference.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has vowed to reduce criminal violence that spiraled after his predecessor, Felipe Calderon, launched an assault on drug cartels in December 2006. Some 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since then.

Avoiding the impulse buy when shopping online

Online shopping is an impulse buyer's dream world, Hamm writes.?If you have a sudden impulse to buy something, you can go online shopping and quickly find it.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / January 28, 2013

Packages ready to ship move along a conveyor belt at the Amazon.com fulfillment center in Phoenix. Amazon is trying very hard to move from the ?shopping cart? model to the ?impulse buy at the checkout? model, Hamm writes.

Recently, I listened to a story on NPR (for the life of me, I can?t find a link to it on their website) where developers at Amazon.com were discussing their goal in shaving seconds off of the time it takes for a person to come to their site with a desire in their head and to have purchased that item. For them, the goal is?thirty seconds.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Think about that for a second. Thirty seconds.

Amazon has a?huge?array of consumer goods available on their site. You can go there and type in just about anything, from Bob?s Red Mill oatmeal to baseball cards, from a new hard drive to a new shirt, from a magazine subscription to a new record for your record player.

In other words,?Amazon is an impulse buyer?s dream world. If you have a sudden impulse to buy something, you can go to Amazon and quickly find it.

They know this, of course, and that?s why they?re trying to get the speed of a transaction down to about thirty seconds. In other words, in roughly the length of time it?s taken you to read this much of this article, you could have bought an item off of Amazon.?

Suspect in India gang rape to be tried as juvenile

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A juvenile court has ruled that a suspect in the fatal gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi last month was a juvenile at the time of the attack.

A lawyer present in the court said a magistrate announced the decision Monday after going over documents presented to the court by officials of the suspect's elementary school that indicated that he was a juvenile at the time of the Dec. 16 attack.

The lawyer could not be named because he was not authorized to brief media.

Buy Now: All Apple MacBook Air Laptops Are $200 Off At Best Buy ...

?

rsz_apple-macbook-air

If you?re in the market for a new laptop and you?re a fan of Apple products, you?re in luck. As The Verge and Business Insider reported, Best Buy is having a huge $200 off sale on all MacBook Air Laptops. It?s causing a bit of an uproar as Apple products are rarely, if ever, allowed to be discounted by retailers.

Even this past Black Friday 2012, Apple only discounted its MacBook Air laptops by $100. The new MacBook Air?s are rumored to be coming out in June 2013, so perhaps Apple is allowing retailers to clear merchandise. Either way, it?s good for business owners and consumers.

Here are your MacBook Air options:

The Verge also reported that at one point, Amazon matched Best Buy?s price for the $799 11-inch MacBook Air model, but it doesn?t seem to be the case anymore.

If you?re interested, you better hurry as the sale ends today or while supplies last. Good luck and happy shopping! Let us know in the comments below if you picked one up.

Egypt's leader imposes state of emergency in 3 cities

"Down, down Morsi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.

In a televised address, Morsi said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday evening. He also called for dialogue with top politicians. About 200 people protested in Ismailia after the announcement.

"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," the president said, adding that he offered condolences to families of the victims of those who died in the cities.

In Cairo the newly appointed interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.

A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister on the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.

State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

In Ismaila city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.

The protesters accuse Morsi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Morsi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

Deep rift
It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Morsi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".

"It is a classic knee jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."

The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.?

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Morsi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Call for dialogue
The National Defence Council, headed by Morsi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Morsi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away. Its currency, the pound, has steadily weakened against the dollar.

AP NewsBreak: Harkin won't seek 6th Senate term

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said Saturday he will not seek a sixth term in 2014, a decision that eases some of the burden the national Republican Party faces in retaking the Senate.

Harkin, chairman of an influential Senate committee, announced his decision during an interview with The Associated Press, and said the move could surprise some.

But the 73-year-old cited his age ? he would be 81 at the end of a sixth term ? as a factor in the decision, saying it was time to pass the torch he has held for nearly 30 years, freeing a new generation of Iowa Democrats to seek higher office.

"I just think it's time for me to step aside," Harkin told the AP.

Harkin, first elected in 1984, ranks 7th in seniority, and 4th among majority Democrats. He is chairman of the health, education, labor and pensions committee, and chairman of the largest appropriations subcommittee.

Harkin has long aligned with the Senate's more liberal members, and his signature legislative accomplishment is the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. He also served as a key salesman of President Barack Obama's 2010 health care bill to the wary left.

"I'm not saying that giving this up and walking away is easy. It's very tough," Harkin said at his rural Iowa home south of Des Moines. "But I'm not quitting today. I'm not passing the torch sitting down."

Harkin's news defied outward signals. Besides being beloved in his party, Harkin has $2.7 million in his campaign war chest, second most among members nearing the end of their terms, and was planning a gala fundraiser in Washington, D.C., next month featuring pop star Lady Gaga.

Although members of his family have been diagnosed with cancer, Harkin said his health is good ? and reported a recent positive colonoscopy. But he said "you never know," and that he wanted to travel and spend his retirement with his wife Ruth "before it's too late."

He also nodded to his political longevity: "The effect of that cascades down and it opens a lot of doors of opportunity" for future candidates, he said.

But by opening a door in Iowa, Harkin has created a potential headache for his party nationally.

Democrats likely would have had the edge in 2014 with the seat, considering Harkin's fundraising prowess and healthy approval. A poll by the Des Moines Register taken last fall showed a majority of Iowans approved of his job performance.

Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage in the Senate, requiring Republicans to gain six seats to win back the chamber. But Democrats have more seats to defend in 2014 ? 20 compared to only 13 for Republicans. Historically, the president's party loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election.

In GOP-leaning West Virginia, five-term Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller recently announced he would not seek re-election. And on Friday, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a Republican, announced that he wouldn't seek a third term.

Democratic incumbents also face tough re-election races in Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina and Alaska ? all states carried by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in November's presidential election.

Harkin's move opens a rare open Senate seat Iowa. Harkin, Iowa's junior senator, is outranked by Sen. Charles Grassley, who has held the state's other seat since 1980.

Attention will turn immediately to U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a fourth-term Democrat from Waterloo, long mentioned as a possible Harkin successor. Braley, who was traveling in Iowa on Saturday, did not immediately return requests by the AP for comments beyond an emailed news statement calling Harkin a "mentor" and "progressive force" who leaves "a legacy few will ever match."

Harkin held open the possibility of endorsing a Democrat before the party's primary if the candidate fit the profile of "someone who is progressive, who is a pragmatic progressive."

Although no Republicans have stepped forward, Harkin's news gives the GOP's private huddles new life.

"There are lots of conversations, but it's very early still," said Nick Ryan, an Iowa Republican campaign fundraiser.

U.S. Rep. Tom Latham of Clive is a seasoned Republican congressman, a veteran appropriations committee member and a robust fundraiser who has survived challenges to win 10 consecutive terms. Aides to Latham declined to comment beyond issuing a statement saying the congressman "respects Sen. Harkin's decision (and) looks forward to continuing to work with him."

Since November, Harkin has stepped up his role as one of the Senate's leading liberal populists.

He was a vocal opponent late last year of President Barack Obama's concession to lift the income threshold for higher taxes to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. Harkin instead supported raising taxes on all earners making more than $250,000 a year.

He also endorsed Obama's call for banning assault rifles and larger ammunition magazines in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting last month

Despite Harkin's strong political position, he has faced questions about his and his wife Ruth's role in developing a namesake policy institute at Iowa State University, Harkin's alma mater. The Harkins and their supporters have been pushing for the institute to house papers highlighting his signature achievements, including the ADA and shaping farm policy as the former chairman of the agriculture committee.

Harkin has avoided questions about fundraising for the institute after disclosure reports showed some of its largest donors are firms that have benefited from his policies.

Harkin dismissed that those questions had any bearing on his decision.

Beyond rape trial, a bigger question about women's status in India

Court proceedings began today for five of the men accused in the deadly gang rape of a young woman in Delhi that led to her recent death.?

By Vaishnavi Chandrashekar and Shivam Vij,?Correspondents / January 24, 2013

Women travel in the women?s compartment of a train in the early morning in Mumbai. The rape of a woman on a bus resulted in a firestorm of protests.

In a slum colony in one corner of Delhi, a heated debate is taking place near the home of Vinay Sharma, one of the six accused in the rape of a 23-year-old student last month that shook the capital and prompted a national discussion. Court proceedings in the case opened today.

The women of Ravi Das Camp gathered to listen to Mr. Sharma's mother defending her son to a reporter but were soon arguing over whom to blame for sexual violence.

"Have you seen how women in Delhi wear short skirts and sit so tight with their boyfriends on motorcycles as though they are going to devour them?" asks one woman, adding, "Men will be men; women should know how not to attract attention."

A high school girl in jeans disagrees. "Why should boys have all the freedom?" she asks. A middle-aged woman, dressed in a sari, supports her. "Nobody rapes a man who comes home at 2 a.m.," she says.

"That is how it is," someone else replies. "Even if a woman becomes a top bureaucrat in our society she is still seen as a woman."

The Delhi gang rape, and the consequent flood of reports on rampant sexual harassment and violence in India, has brought global attention to an issue that has been largely overshadowed by the country's "growth story": Despite prominent female leaders and important strides in education, many Indian women continue to face discrimination and violence daily, especially if they are from marginal communities.

Crimes against women are high, illegal child marriage and payment of dowries persist, and some gender gaps are widening.

The World Economic Forum ranked India 105 on the Gender Gap Index in 2012, up from the year before, but below its 2006 ranking, and far below countries like Ghana and Bangladesh. It scored highest on political empowerment and lowest in women's health and survival.

There is "great resilience in the basic features of gender inequality in India," says well-known development economist Jean Dreze, "in contrast with many other countries ? including Bangladesh ? where there are significant signs of social change."

The challenges faced by Indian women reflect broader contradictions: Two decades of economic growth and globalization have brought improved opportunities but also greater inequality. That paradox was captured in a July survey that ranked India as the worst place to be a woman among the Group of 20 countries that make up the world's biggest economies, based on parameters like health services, threat of violence, and property rights.

Slight gains, stronger inequalities

Ravi Das Camp, where four of the men accused of the gang rape lived, is not unlike the victim's neighborhood in the opposite corner of New Delhi.

Both are full of poor families reaching for a better life, including through the education of their daughters. Sharma worked in a gym and waited tables to help his father, a balloon seller, put his two younger sisters through school.

Club Solutions Magazine | Obesity: Are Schools the Answer?

Apparently, America isn?t the only nation with an obesity crisis in its midst. USA Today recently reported that China is having an obesity crisis of its own. To fight it, the country is urging its youth to be active.

According to USA Today, the obesity problem in China is being blamed on the rise in popularity of video games and fast food. In an effort to counteract these bad habits, USA Today reported that, ?The Chinese government is urging schools to boost physical education amid a growing obesity problem.?

Ring a bell? The same issues ? video games and fast food ? could be causes of America?s own obesity problem. It?s not only an issue in America and China. Obesity is a problem that countries all of the world face.

However, instead of turning to schools to fight the obesity problem, in children specifically, how can health clubs make a positive impact? After all, schools were built to teach and educate. Their main focus is not to foster fitness. That?s where you step in.

Think about how you, specifically, could influence children?s health in a positive way. Consider reaching out to school districts in your area, to see if they?d be interested in becoming community partners. Do you offer a kids? Group X class, such as Zumbatomic (a Zumba class designed for children between the ages of 4 and 10)? See if schools would be interested in having one of your instructors come to the school a couple times a month, to teach a class during recess or gym.

Are any of your personal trainers good public speakers? Are they energetic and passionate about their job? Ask a principal if they?d be willing to let that personal trainer speak during a school assembly on the importance of fitness.

You, your personal trainers and instructors, have knowledge about health and fitness that schools don?t have. Put that knowledge to good use, and see if you can help fight the obesity epidemic!

Do you have any ideas you?d like to share on how health clubs could help fight obesity?
